In my bedroom as i sit here in ‘the West’ watching the sun rise in ‘the east’, it (ah) dawns on me:
it says a lot about our culture that when we meet someone who is a little bit odd or vaguely resistant to discipline, we say they are ‘a bit of a free spirit’,
as though it were some kind of anomalous personality trait.
After going to church last weekend i am no longer so cynical about the West as i have been in recent years,
but still, our perspective on people and the language we use to describe them
could do with a bit of a tweak.
We are all free spirits—some of us just don’t know that or value it yet.
